The concave spokeshave is our latest addition to the family. Concave spokeshaves are popular with chair and paddle makers for good reason. When shaping parts, adjacent cuts blend together much more smoothly than with a flat-soled tool. In practical terms, this translates into less time spent scraping and sanding. With a blade bed angle of 45° and sole radius of 1-5/16", this shave is well suited for a wide range of jobs from small spindles to large oars. All three spokeshaves have a 1/8" (0.125") thick A2 tool steel blade, seated at 45° to the sole. The thick blade, carefully machined lever cap and blade bed all combine to produce chatterfree cutting in virtually all conditions. The ductile cast iron body is fitted with African rosewood handles that are shaped for comfort and control, offering several ways to grip the tool comfortably with no corners or edges to cause discomfort when either pulling or pushing. The toe provides a convenient thumb rest that allows the user to choke up on the body to achieve an unusual degree of control for fine work. The twin adjustment thumb wheels quickly and accurately control the depth of cut and skew. Together with the cast steel lever cap, the thumb wheels also ensure the blade may be easily removed for sharpening and other maintenance, then re-installed into the same position. Two shims are included so that you can adjust the mouth opening to suit your work needs. Each weighs about 12 oz. 10-1/2" long overall. P 3311 Concave Spokeshave £54.05 P 3312 Repl. blade £19.80
This small, low-angle block plane is the answer to a trim carpenter's prayers. At only 14 oz it is half the weight of a standard block plane, a significant factor if you want to carry it in your apron all day. The 5-1/2" long, tough ductile cast iron body will take job-site accidents in stride. This is not a plane body that will break when dropped. It has good hand feel; the unique side wings let you grip it comfortably and firmly as well as provide excellent stability for shooting. It is available with either a high-carbon (HCS) or an A2 tool steel blade. The high-carbon blade is 0.098" thick, 1-1/4" wide and hardened to Rc60-62. This blade is nearly 25% thicker than the 0.080" blades standard in most block planes. If you want yet more beef, choose the plane with the A2 tool steel blade at 1/8" (0.125") thick. Like our other block planes, the apron plane has a combined feed and lateral adjustment mechanism that makes setting easy and accurate. 12° bed angle. The ball tail and tall knob can convert the Veritas® low-angle block plane into a small low-angle smoothing plane. From day one the Veritas low-angle block planes were machined to accept a ball tail for a firmer grip when smoothing. A tall knob is a natural companion to it. Though the low-angle plane can be used with much force and comfort with only the ball tail, full benefit is obtained when you add the tall knob (replacing the brass front knob that came with your plane). The combination allows you to bear down quite heavily, letting it perform like a low-angle smoothing plane, albeit smaller. Note: The 18° micro-bevel that the low-angle block plane comes with may not be strong enough to withstand the added forces that can be experienced when using the ball tail. If you get edge failure, increase the bevel angle. This is explained in the manual that comes with the low-angle block plane. The NEW Ball Tail & Knob will be available Mid July 2004. P 2203 Ball Tail for P 2201 £16.37 P 2204 Tall Front Knob for P 2201 £4.64
The Veritas® Bullnose Shoulder Plane, perfect for cleaning up machine-cut joints, will be one of the most useful hand joinery tools you'll ever own. Designed for maximum versatility, it performs as either a bullnose or a chisel plane as required. Simply loosen the brass toe-locking knob to remove the toe piece for chisel plane configuration, and you can work right up to a blind corner. An adjustable set screw in the toe acts as a stop to accurately set the mouth opening. It also ensures that when switching between configurations the toe will be repositioned with the same mouth opening previously established and ensures that you will never accidentally jam the nose against the blade edge. It measures 4-3/4" long by 1" wide and weighs just over 1-1/4 lb. The ductile cast iron body and toe are accurately machined and ground so that the sole and sides are flat and square. Shaped to fit comfortably in the hand, the low, broad lever cap meets the palm of your hand and your forefinger rests in the toe pocket, for maximum comfort and control. The through hole in the body adds to grip security. The plane's adjustable toe lets you narrow the mouth for very fine shavings with minimum tear-out. The low bed angle of 15°, combined with the 25° blade bevel, results in a cutting angle of 40° for exceptional end-grain cutting performance. Set screws along the side enable you to accurately position the blade, and after sharpening replace it without lateral adjustment. The blade is 1/8" (0.125") thick and made of A2 tool steel hardened to Rc60-62. P 4201 Bullnose Shoulder Plane Price: £96.35 P 4202 Replacement Blade £21.63
This cabinet scraper is a very useful and versatile tool. Used in place of a much heavier belt sander, it can clean a dirty workbench top, remove dried glue and smooth a panel or tricky grain tabletop efficiently, leaving behind a surface free of tear-out, digs or gouges. We have designed this tool with several improvements over what is usually known as the No. 80 cabinet scraper. To allow the user to apply pressure directly in line with the cutting edge and prevent the blade catching when the scraper runs off the end of the workpiece, the sole is longer and the handles have been placed further back and slightly lower than seen in other scrapers. The blade is 2-3/4" wide with both edges ground at 45° so that the tool may have two cutting edges prepared at once, thus halving the number of sharpening sessions. The casting is shaped to protect both the upward-facing cutting edge and the user from accidental damage. Made from ductile cast iron, the scraper will stand up to robust use. The sole is surface ground for accuracy. Two screws secure the blade, and the integral thumbscrew is used to set blade camber. The sole is 3-3/16" long, 3-3/8" wide. Overall length is 11-1/2". Weighs about 1 lb, 10 oz. Comes with detailed instructions. P3205 £34.08 Replacement Blade, Cabinet Scraper P3206 £2.93
Spokeshaves are basic shop tools, admired for their versatility. In designing these spokeshaves, we further increased their traditional versatility in several ways. The A2 tool steel blades, although adding quite a bit to the cost, stay sharp about five times as long as carbon steel and, at 1/8" thick, eliminate chatter caused by blade flex. The twin blade-adjust screws fit snugly in the blade recesses with minimal lost motion, and let you skew the blade so that one end takes a heavier cut than the other, something the pros like. The controlled skewing action can also compensate for off-square sharpening, something the amateurs like. These spokeshaves have a 45° bed angle and come with shims so that you can adjust the mouth opening to suit your work needs. The sole of the round shave has a 1.75" radius. Both have sculpted thumb rests on the body front and back so the grip is comfortable whether you are pushing or pulling the shave. Finally, they have rosewood handles, comfortable in the hands and pleasing to the eye. Like the other planes, these spokeshaves have ductile cast iron bodies with brass fittings. Each weighs about 12 oz. 10-1/2" long overall. Available with a round or flat bottom. Flat Spokeshave P 3301 £48.18 Round Spokeshave P 3303 £48.18 Replacement Blade 2 1/8" P 3305 £14.35
A low-angle smooth plane has three key uses. It is used to smooth large surfaces, preferably taking a diagonal cut, partly across and partly along the grain. Similarly, with its generous side wings, it is ideal for shooting miters. Finally, it is excellent for end-grain work. The low cutting angle of 37° minimizes fibre tearing. With a bed angle of 12°, this is a "bevel-up" plane, like a low-angle block. The 2" wide A2 tool steel blade (1/8" thick) is hardened to Rc60-62 and is both tougher (resistant to chipping) and more wear resistant than a regular carbon steel blade; it holds a fine edge longer. The plane's adjustable mouth can be closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out or opened for heavier cuts, all done quickly and easily with the front locking knob. The generous wooden front knob and rear handle provide a comfortable grip and excellent control. The combined feed and lateral adjustment knob makes blade setting easy and accurate. The excellent damping qualities of the blade, combined with the solid bed and clamping system, virtually eliminate chatter under all conditions. The body, cast from ductile iron, is 10-1/2" x 2-1/2"; overall weight is just over 3-1/2 lb. If you have never owned a low-angle smooth, you will find it a delight to use and immediately one of your favorite planes. P2501 £123.38 Replacement Blade 2" Low Angle Smooth Plane P2502 £18.09
The Veritas® Low-Angle Jack Plane is an exceptionally versatile plane. It excels at end grain work, is great for shooting and also works well for smoothing. With the optional high-angle blade, it is also the answer for working difficult grain, making it a well-rounded workhorse. Veritas have designated it as a 62-1/2 because of its generous size, heavier weight, low center of gravity and radically set-back mouth. The plane is 15" long and weighs in at just under 6 lb. You will appreciate the way this plane, with a toe that is one-third the length of the sole, registers to the work piece and the authority it provides when planing. This is a "bevel-up" plane, with a 12° bed angle similar to a low-angle block plane. The 2-1/4" wide blade is 3/16" (0.187") thick and made of A2 tool steel hardened to Rc60-62. The body is fully stress-relieved, ductile cast iron. It is accurately machined so that the sole is flat and the sides are square to the sole. The sheer mass of the plane, combined with the large side wings, makes it both more stable and more effective than its predecessors. The specially shaped lever cap, together with the machined thumb recess on either side of the body, provides both comfort and excellent control when shooting. The plane's adjustable mouth can be closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out or opened for heavier cuts. All of this can be done quickly and accurately with the front locking knob and the unique mouth adjustment screw. The large wooden front knob and rear handle provide a comfortable grip. The adjustment mechanism, with its combined feed and lateral adjustment knob, makes blade setting easy and accurate. The set screws on either side of the blade prevent it from shifting in use, but allow full lateral adjustment. The optional high-angle blade enables this plane to excel at smoothing varying-grain woods. This NEW Low-Angle Jack Plane will be available Mid July 2004. The shoulder plane (a specialized rabbet plane) is the ultimate tool for trimming a joint to a perfect fit. There is no better plane for trimming the shoulder of a tenon to perfection or for rebating work. The Veritas® medium shoulder plane is proportioned for versatility; it measures 7" long by 0.700" wide and weighs 2 lb. The ductile cast iron body is accurately machined and ground so that the sole and sides are flat and square. If you have ever used or even held a traditional shoulder plane, you will appreciate how this plane comes to hand. The unique lever cap with a pivoting knob lets you adjust the plane to fit your hand and preferred holding style. The concave knob rests in the web of your hand, giving you a secure grip without the need of a vise-like pressure. The through-hole in the body adds to grip security but has to be experienced to be understood. The plane's adjustable toe lets you narrow the mouth for very fine shavings with minimum tear-out. The low bed angle of 15° combined with the 25° blade bevel results in a cutting angle of 40° for exceptional end-grain cutting performance. Set screws along the side enable you to accurately position the blade and do not require adjustment when replacing the blade after sharpening. The blade is 1/8" (0.125") thick and made of A2 tool steel hardened to Rc60-62. This is the first model of an upcoming line of shoulder planes. P4101 £104.58 Replacement Blade, Shoulder Plane P4102 £22.24
This smoothing plane introduces a completely new concept in bench planes, a frog that extends all the way to the sole of the plane. Not only is this the most effective design to reduce blade chatter (by providing complete blade support), but it allows a user to quickly adjust the mouth as required. It can be closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out, or opened for heavier cuts. All of this is done without having to remove the lever cap or anything else from the plane; simply loosen a pair of screws and dial the desired opening with a thumbwheel. The carefully machined fit between frog and sole makes the process fast and accurate. The 2-7/8" x 10" ductile cast iron body (both more durable and more stable than gray iron) is fully stress relieved, machined, and surface ground on both the wings and sole for accuracy. The sole is guaranteed to be flat to 0.003" concave, never convex. The wings are square to the sole within 15 minutes (1/4°). The extra-large side wings make for very stable shooting. The 2-3/8" wide blade is a full 1/8" thick and made of A2 tool steel, tougher and more wear resistant than high-carbon steel as well as being able to hold a keen edge up to five times as long. The thick blade, combined with the full-depth frog, virtually eliminates chatter under all conditions; you can even hear the difference while planing. Both the hardwood front knob and tote are generous in size for a comfortable grip with good control. The combined feed and lateral adjust lever make blade setting easy and accurate. At just over 5 lb, this has the mass needed for an effective smoother. The net effect of all these improvements is a new standard in plane design. P2301 £142.18 Replacement Blade 2 3/8", No. 4 1/2" Plane P2302 £28.96
The No. 4 smooth plane is the most commonly used bench plane because of its versatility. It is the perfect size for general smoothing, finish work, trimming parts and other odd jobs at the bench. It has the mass required to cut smoothly but is also light enough to avoid fatigue in use. The sole is 9-1/2" long and the blade is 2" wide. Weight is 4 lb 6 oz. Like all our Veritas® bench planes it incorporates a unique frog that extends all the way to the sole of the plane to eliminate blade chatter and to allow the user to quickly adjust the mouth as required. It can be closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out, or opened for heavier cuts. All of this is done without having to remove the lever cap or anything else from the plane; simply loosen a pair of screws and dial the desired opening with a thumbwheel. The body and frog are ductile cast iron and are fully stress relieved. The wings and sole are accurately machined and surface ground. The extra-large side wings make for very stable shooting. The blade is a full 1/8" thick and made of A2 tool steel. Both the hardwood front knob and tote are generous in size for a comfortable grip with good control. The combined feed and lateral adjust lever make blade setting easy and accurate. P2601 £135.13 Replacement Blade 2" No. 4 Smooth Plane P2402 £27.25
The No. 5-1/4 was often referred to as a junior jack. At 12" long, it fell between the No. 4 smooth plane at 10" long and the No. 5 jack at 14" long. Our No. 5-1/4W varies from the traditional No. 5-1/4 in numerous ways, but the two most significant dimensional differences are that ours has a 2" wide blade (rather than 1-3/4") and the mouth is 4-1/2" back of the nose compared with 3-1/2" for the original. This extra length of sole in front of the blade makes it much easier to cut accurately because the extra-long nose makes it easier to maintain the sole flush to the material at the start of a cut. In fact, the combination of the mouth location and the very sensitive feed adjustment lets this plane serve as a jointer for most cabinet work, just as a No. 5 is used as a jointer. The No. 5-1/4W is an ideal complement to our No. 4-1/2 for bench work. Like our No. 4-1/2, it is made from ductile cast iron and has the same adjustable frog with a combined feed and lateral adjust mechanism that is sturdy, yet sensitive and accurate. The easily adjusted frog is machined to fit snugly in the plane body and, combined with the 1/8" thick A2 tool steel blade, eliminates virtually all blade chatter. Because the frog extends right through to the sole, adjusting the frog to narrow the mouth does not reduce blade support as it does in standard planes of this style. P2401 £142.18 Replacement Blade 2", No. 5 1/4" Plane P2402 £27.25
The No. 6 fore plane is ideal for smoothing and flattening large surfaces, such as panels, tabletops and workbench tops. The long sole ensures accurate results, as it will not follow the bumps and valleys that a shorter plane would. This is our largest bench plane, with a sole 18" long and blade 2-3/8" wide. Its weight is just under 6-3/4 lb. Like all our bench planes, it incorporates a unique frog that extends all the way to the sole of the plane to eliminate blade chatter and to allow the user to quickly adjust the mouth as required. It can be closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out, or opened for heavier cuts. All of this is done without having to remove the lever cap or anything else from the plane; simply loosen a pair of screws and dial the desired opening with a thumbwheel. The body and frog are cast ductile iron and are fully stress relieved. The wings and sole are accurately machined and surface ground. The extra-large side wings make for stable shooting. The blade is a full 1/8" thick and made of A2 tool steel. Both the hardwood front knob and tote are generous in size for a comfortable grip with good control. The combined feed and lateral adjust lever makes blade setting easy and accurate. P2801 £155.10
The Veritas® scraping plane is the ideal tool for final smoothing — especially when you have to deal with highly figured wood or reversing grain. With a well-sharpened blade and light cuts you can achieve excellent results on any wood. Tear-out is virtually eliminated with the cutting action of the included scraping blade. The generous wooden front knob and rear handle make it comfortable to use for extended periods and the large sole ensures an accurately flattened surface. The adjustable frog enables blade angles from 0° to 25°, providing fine control of the cutting action. A feature unique to our scraping plane is an integral thumbscrew that bows the blade to eliminate ridges in the work surface caused by blade corners. The plane comes with a 0.055" high-carbon steel blade suited to this technique, and an optional 1/8" (0.125") thick blade of A2 tool steel is available for those who prefer uncambered blades. Also available is a 1/8" (0.125") thick A2 tool steel toothed blade with V-shaped teeth at 25 teeth per inch. The toothed blade will prepare a surface for veneering by lightly grooving it to increase surface area for better glue adhesion. It is also used to pre-condition areas of very difficult grain before the regular scraping blade is used. All blade styles are 2-7/8" wide, hardened to Rc48-51, and come with the cutting edges ground at 45°. The 10" ductile cast iron body has been fully stress relieved, machined, and surface ground on the sole. Weight is 4 lb. Detailed instructions included. We now offer a standard block plane in the Veritas® line, based on the same design as our low-angle block plane (#05P22.01). Preferred for general-purpose work, the 20° bed angle plus the 25° bevel angle on the bevel-up blade result in an effective cutting angle of 45°, the same as found in most bench planes. A low-profile lever cap results in a plane that fits the hand well, at only 1/8" higher than its low-angle sibling. Mechanically, it shares the same features: a combined blade advance and lateral adjust, blade guide screws, an adjustable nosepiece, a 6" x 2" footprint, and a 1/8" thick by 1-5/8" wide A2 tool steel blade.
